VeeBoards® FAQ — FMCSA Compliance, Sizing, Fleet Pricing & More

Everything you need to know about VeeBoards® edge protection — regulations, product selection, ordering, and shipping.

Compliance & Regulations

Are VeeBoards® required by federal law?

Yes. 49 CFR § 393.104(f)(4) is the FMCSA regulation that requires edge protection. It mandates that edge protection must be used whenever a tiedown would be subject to abrasion or cutting where it touches cargo:

Edge protection must be used whenever a tiedown would be subject to abrasion or cutting where it touches cargo. The protection used must resist abrasion, cutting, and crushing.

Any flatbed load with metal edges, sharp corners, crating, or abrasive surfaces requires edge protection. Failure to comply can result in DOT citations, out-of-service orders, and liability exposure in the event of a load shift. VeeBoards® are purpose-built to satisfy this federal requirement on every load. Shop VeeBoards® →

What DOT inspection criteria apply to edge protection?

During a DOT roadside inspection, a commercial vehicle specialist (CVS) can place a driver out of service for inadequate cargo securement under the North American Standard Out-of-Service Criteria. Cargo with sharp edges that lack compliant edge protection is a citable condition. A single OOS event can cost hundreds to thousands of dollars in delays, fines, and CSA score impact. Using VeeBoards® on every load with edge-contact straps is the low-cost, high-certainty compliance solution.

Products & Sizing

What are VeeBoards® and what do they do?

VeeBoards® are V-shaped cargo corner protectors manufactured from a proprietary premium polyethylene blend — crack-resistant, UV-stable, and field-proven for over 20 years in US commercial freight. They sit at cargo edges wherever ratchet straps, chains, or binders make contact, distributing strap pressure across a larger surface area. Benefits:

  • Prevents straps from cutting into cargo edges — protecting your freight and your customer’s product
  • Dramatically extends strap lifespan by eliminating edge abrasion and fraying
  • Maintains even strap tension for a more stable, secure load
  • Satisfies FMCSA 49 CFR § 393.104(f)(4) edge protection requirement

What size VeeBoards® do I need?

Size Model Best For
10″ VB13 Light freight, lumber, short strap runs, compact loads
24″ VB24 Most versatile — works for the majority of flatbed applications
36″ VB36 Pipe bundles, wide machinery, extended strap contact zones
48″ VB48 Maximum coverage — oversize loads, high-value freight

When in doubt, start with the 24″. Full size guide →

What are VeeBoards® made from?

VeeBoards® are manufactured from a proprietary premium polyethylene blend that is crack-resistant, UV-stable, and engineered for repeated use in all weather and temperature conditions. Every VeeBoard® is made in the USA. The material has been proven on real flatbed freight for over 20 years.

What is VB2GO® and how is it different from standard VeeBoards®?

VB2GO® is VeeBoards’ stackable corner protector system. Standard VeeBoards® store loosely. VB2GO® units interlock in a compact stack — easy to count, grab, and store in a toolbox or truck cab. Available in 12-packs and 20-packs. The VB2GO Lite is scaled for lighter freight applications. Both function identically to standard VeeBoards® for FMCSA § 393.104(f)(4) compliance purposes.

When do I need a BrickGuard® instead of a VeeBoard®?

BrickGuard® is a cube-style corner protector for cargo with 90-degree box corners where a V-channel won’t seat flush against the load. Common applications include crated machinery, palletized brick, block freight, and square-edged industrial loads. Available in 24″ and 48″ drop lengths. View BrickGuard® →
